What to do before a contractor arrives
Stop using sinks, showers, toilets and appliances that discharge water. Keep children and pets away from sewage and do not add chemical drain cleaners.
If sewage reaches living space, photograph the damage from a safe location and contact your homeowner’s insurer. Do not assume your policy covers the blockage, cleanup or damaged pipe; ask about each separately.
A backup is a symptom, not a diagnosis
Recurring clogs across several fixtures, gurgling toilets and sewer odor can indicate a problem farther along the drain system. Roots, buildup or deteriorated pipe may be involved, but the cause needs to be checked on site.
Ask the contractor what they found, whether clearing restored flow and whether a camera inspection is appropriate before committing to repair work.
Emergency service costs
The site’s typical 2026 estimate for main sewer line snaking is $250–$550. Emergency after-hours calls may add $100–$250. Access, pipe condition and the work required affect the final quote.
Confirm the callout fee, clearing charge and any inspection or cleanup costs before work begins. These are estimates, not a fixed-price offer.
